Looking back to my childhood, I have many vivid memories of always being sick and missing many days of school. As much as a child wants to miss school, this extreme, was beyond frustrating–I missed an average of 20+ school days a year!
Fast forward to my 20s and 30s, and the struggle with constant sickness was real. It was like a storm cloud hanging over my everyday life affecting my jobs, my social life and my mental health.
Then, in my late 30s, joints started creaking, and an endless tiredness settled in, making some folks think I was just being “lazy.” Little did I know, it was my body’s way of signaling something bigger—chronic illness and inflammation, along with food sensitivities.
Tuning Into My Intuition
My wake-up moment hit me like a ton of bricks when my first bundle of joy entered the scene in my early 30s. Baby #1 wasn’t just your typical newborn fussy; we’re talking full-blown, nighttime screaming marathons that seemed to last for eons no matter what we did. It was a whole new level of challenging.
Soon after, we determined that our baby had what many parenting books refer to as “colic.” However, what I learned through my own research is that colic is basically this nebulous term that is thrown out there by doctors for desperate parents to grasp on to. “Oh, don’t worry Grandma, Jonny’s always fussy and just a colicky baby.”
Then, when my son was just three months old, he was diagnosed with reflux along with several ear infections and rashes. What we didn’t know yet, that our pediatrician also didn’t seem to know, is that ALL of these symptoms can be caused by undiagnosed food sensitivities. Oh, and that “colic“ – also undiagnosed food sensitivities!
Our pediatrician’s solutions were pills, cortisone creams, and ear surgery (A.K.A. tubes in the ears). However, none of that felt right to me.
Instead, my urge was to figure out what is CAUSING these ailments? I didn’t just want to treat the symptoms, I wanted to get to the root cause.
Slowly, I began to trust my intuition, devoured natural baby books, and sought out health care providers who focused on finding a cause and who valued prevention.
Imagine our immense relief when several months later we found a wonderful alternative practitioner who finally diagnosed my son’s food sensitivities! My son’s body was telling him (and us) exactly what it didn’t want. We just had to tune into that special message.
By this time, my intuition was telling me, loud and clear, to seek out the root of the problem so it could be prevented. Ultimately, this led me down a path seeking holistic health and healing.
Connecting the Dots
When we unraveled the link between my son’s health hurdles and his food sensitivities, a light bulb went off, prompting me to turn the spotlight on my own well-being. If the culprits causing his tummy troubles—gluten, dairy, and soy—were making him uncomfortable, could they be the root of my own issues?
Lo and behold, those were indeed significant contributors to my health challenges! Yet, diving into health and wellness is akin to peeling an onion—layer after layer, and definitely not a “one-size-fits-all” scenario!
Finally, in my 40’s I found a team of practitioners who dove deep into my health history, connected ALL of the dots, and made some important diagnoses.
Guided by the wisdom of Jessica Flanigan, an insightful author, and the expertise of Dr. Joe Smith from Atlas Health out of California, I finally got to the bottom of my health struggles and received a diagnosis: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease.
In addition, they discovered a genetic iron loading blood disorder called Hemachromatosis that can cause symptoms such as fatigue and joint pain. It also can be the culprit of many common diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and liver disease. In fact approximately 1 in 100 humans has this genetic disorder!
What’s intriguing is that this disorder isn’t just a solo act; it can set the stage for common diseases like diabetes, heart issues, and liver problems.
But that’s not all—enter toxic mold. Mold, a silent troublemaker, has found its way into countless homes through water leaks, shoddy construction, and more. Shockingly, there are no regulations to keep it in check when purchasing a home or moving into a rental. Stay tuned for a deep dive into this moldy maze of the health effects it has on some people in an upcoming post.
Through my health journey, there is one thing I know for certain. There is no magic bullet or quick fix. The key to health and wellness is empowerment and learning to tap into your intuition and your own awareness. Our bodies tell us a lot, if we listen.
It’s a beautiful process and I’m here to help you further your journey to wholeness and holistic wellness.
